Why buy cannabis from micro cultivators?

When it comes to choosing connoisseur-grade cannabis most seasoned consumers reflexively think of options on the legacy market. However, micro cultivators are now closing that gap in quality between legal and legacy and have become a viable option for premium connoisseur-grade cannabis. So let’s talk about why you should seriously consider spending your hard earned money on products from these legal smaller producers and which of them we recommend.

Micro cultivators are now widely considered to be at the epicenter of quality Canadian cannabis. They grow their cannabis in facilities that are much smaller than those of standard licensed producers, with a maximum 2,150 square feet of canopy space. This smaller canopy space allows growers to give more love and attention to each and every plant thus resulting in a higher quality, craft cannabis product. Micro-cultivators are also more likely to take the time to hang dry, hand trim and individually hand fill every package, ensuring the best possible product makes its way into your hands, each and every time. The ability these smaller, craft growers have to produce a higher quality product comes from the freedom to spend extra time and care with their flowers in a way that just isn’t possible in most larger facilities.

Now, a few years on from legalization there are a handful of very promising micro based brands appearing on the Canadian market. These brands are producing some of the high quality flower and concentrates that Canadian cannabis connoisseurs have grown accustom to. As micro producers and their products are becoming more readily available we think it’s important to talk about those who stand out amongst the rest.

In this article we dive into the top 4 Canadian micro cannabis producers that Sessions has tried and stands behind. These four are consistently bringing small batch, premium quality cannabis to market. Check them out below.

Habitat

Rudi Schiebel and Laine Keyes founded Habitat with an ambitious plan – to incorporate highly sustainable aquaponic agricultural systems in the production of both certified organic cannabis and organic coho salmon. Located in Turtle Bay in the Shuswap region of British Columbia, Habitat is producing cannabis with a focus on sustainable agricultural practises. This approach to sustainability is key to creating a cannabis industry respectful of the very nature it’s derived from.

Their unique system consists of large holding tanks where coho salmon are raised to full maturity. Waste is collected throughout the life cycle of the fish and then processed with nitrifying bacteria in order to create nutrients that are then hydroponically fed to the cannabis plants. This growing practice uses a minimal amount of resources, recycling as much as 98% of the water used throughout the entire operation. Additionally, excess carbon dioxide generated by the aforementioned bacteria is absorbed by the cannabis plants, resulting in one of the lowest carbon footprints in the cannabis industry. Pretty epic stuff.

Habitat’s cannabis will be released under their new Cake & Caviar brand hitting the legal market in late summer 2021. The Cake & Caviar lineup has been carefully hand-selected through decades of breeding and pheno hunting of the most elite genetics in British Columbia.

The brand is focused on two distinct flavour profiles of cannabis. The first is the Cake line, which will resemble the smell of baked goods, with strains like Blueberry Yum Yum, Lemon Loaf, and Waffle Bites. The second and more dank and potent of the two, is their Caviar line. It features cultivars dominated by classic gassy and earthy notes associated with a connoisseur grade, heavy indica smoke. If relaxation is what you’re aiming for, chances are the Caviar line will help you accelerate the process.

With an innovative approach to vertical farming while using sustainable aquaponic systems which are beneficial to the land, water and air around us, Habitat is not only revolutionizing cannabis cultivation but also providing consumers with high quality flower.

Organnicraft

OrganniCraft began producing cannabis immediately after legalization working hard to carve out a spot in the Canadian cannabis scene in a big way. Situated in the Okanagan valley, the OrganniCraft team consists of a small dedicated group of passionate and experienced people who have maintained a reputation for providing quality cannabis in British Columbia for decades. Through their stain variety, consistent quality, and reasonable pricing, OrganniCraft is steadily taking its spot on top of the craft cannabis scene.

Some of our favorite offerings from OrganniCraft so far have been Lilac Diesel, a cultivar meant for early mornings and daytime smoking; Nitro Cookies, an evenly balanced hybrid great for anytime of day and activity; and last but definitely not least, Cherry Punch, a heavy hitting incredibly flavorful offering that is best kept for nighttime puffing. This is the same Cherry Punch that took a respectable second place amongst a very competitive field in the first Session’s Highlife Cup.

Simply put, OrganniCraft consistently produces small batch, premium quality cannabis that consumers can count on when looking for a product worth their time and hard earned dollars.

The stand-out cultivar from Sweetgrass is their Mint Chocolate Chip – a cross between Green Ribbon BX and Mystery Cookies originally created by the highly respected legacy market breeder Exotic Genetix. Having tried this particular cultivar in the past from various other growers, we can easily say it has never been grown anywhere close to the quality coming out of the Sweetgrass farm. It’s a refreshing, minty, palate cleanser, amidst smooth, dessert like flavours. The high is also a refreshing one, beginning very lightly on entry, and climaxing in a full bodied, well balanced stone, great for puffing all day long.

Not only does Sweetgrass produce high grade flower, but they also clearly have an eye for quality cannabis photography and videography. These are two qualities the team at Sessions highly respect. Check out more videos from the links below, follow Sweetgrass on instagram, and be sure to grab some some of their flower if you can find it!

Dunn Cannabis, founded in 2018 by Robert Logan Dunn, is based on three simple concepts: expert cultivation, small-batch production and a premium final product. Dunn Cannabis was founded in British Columbia and since launching their micro-cultivation facility in Abbotsford they have managed to get their products on the shelves in several provinces, including Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The supply of high quality cannabis, with unique cultivars, on a consistent basis, is the backbone of every successful cannabis operation. Dunn Cannabis shows great promise of taking a spot amongst Canada’s leaders in the legal market for all the reasons listed above. One of the most intriguing reasons to keep a close eye on Dunn, is their vast catalogue of genetics consisting of approximately 70 unique cultivars. The ability to provide diversity is key to maintaining a strong customer base. By periodically releasing their library of cultivars over the coming years Dunn Cannabis should have no problem maintaining and growing their list of loyal customers.

After smoking a range of their cultivars, such as Secret Mints, Island Pink Screwhead and Acai Berry Gelato, we stand by classing Dunn Cannabis as a premium, craft cannabis outlet. Quality like this is only made possible by expert cultivation, attention to detail and a passion to hunt for the ultimate cultivars.
